35mm FILM PHOTOGRAPH // shot in Monterey, CA
++ This image was shot at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Those white blotches are actually jellyfish. This was the first shot on a point and shoot camera loaded with expired film with an ISO far too low to be in the darkly lit tunnel of the exhibit. It was pressed against the glass of a jellyfish aquarium and shot right as the lights in the tank began to dim. Expired film loses its ability to record light and color as it ages. Often times we are left with grainy, foggy and monochromatic effects. ++
ABSTRACT SERIES. Reminiscent of modern abstract paintings, specifically Rothko, these 35mm film compositions are considered technical errors and most frequently thrown in the trash. They are the first or last pieces on a roll of negatives. They are the unexpected aberrations that come with the tangible nature of shooting film. For this series, these compositions are turned from horizontal to vertical and mimic abstract art on a canvas.
