35mm black and white film photograph // shot in Point Loma, CA
This is an image from my SoCal Series. Southern California, specifically San Diego, has been ‘home’ to me for 18+ years. Through pivotal stages of development and in and out of countless seasons of life, the energy of the area has been with me for the long haul. The SoCal series is a mini-tribute to the warm, coastal, beach vibe and the deep resonance the nostalgia of the coastal experience brings to my soul.
IMAGE SPECIFICS: this shot was taken on the streets of Point Loma when I was attending college at Point Loma University in 1998-2000. (Come full circle, I lived in this exact neighborhood 20 years later). At this time in my life, I was only dabbling in photography and was shooting on friends’ cameras who were taking art classes at the University. I can’t even remember what camera this was…my guess is an early 90’s Canon. It was shot on Ilford Delta PRO black and white film. Out of a roll of negatives, I have this as a single neg, cut out of the strip of negs that was shot by the owner of the camera and who wanted all of the rest of the roll for a project. This is the first and only b+w image I will be printing with these print releases…until I set up a darkroom of my own and can print in-house. This negative is severely damaged. it is scratched and bent and splattered with a sticky substance that can’t be removed. It would be nearly impossible to even print in a darkroom. For this print release, it has been scanned and digitally edited to remove scratches and spots in the sky.
CAMERA: most likely a Canon
FILM: Ilford Delta Pro
